ABOUT LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

Facts:
Lake Manyara National Park 330 km2
Lake Manyara is 200 km2
Located in The Great Rift Valley
Distance from Kilimanjaro International Airport 170km
Driving time from Kilimanjaro International Airport approx. 3 hours
Flight time from Arusha airport to Manyara airstrip approx. 30 minutes, daily departures
Soda lake with a rich bird life

Lake Manyara National Park was established in 1960 because of its special natural environment with Lake Manyara and surrounding forests and savannah landscapes.

Lake Manyara stretches 50 km along the bottom of the 600 meter high Rift Valley fault. Lake Manyara a scenic gem that Ernest Hemingway praised as something of unparalleled beauty, “the most beautiful thing I had seen in Africa”.

Lake Manyara is a microcosm of Tanzanian nature and Tanzanian safari experience with lush jungle-like forest, savannah, freshwater, soda lake and bushland with dry areas. This alternation of habitat types over short distances provides the opportunity for many species of animals and bird species. In the forests, one can find Manyara’s secret, lions that climb trees, which is very rare. Over 400 bird species have been recorded in the park. Large herds of elephants, hippopotamus, buffalo, giraffes, wildebeest, zebra, leopard, cheetah and many other species can also be observed in the park.

At times of the year, the shallow Lake Manyara can look pink from a distance. It is the huge flocks of flamingos that make the sea look pink from a distance. The flamingo’s pink colored plumage is obtained when it eats the special crustaceans that live in soda lakes, a highly alkaline environment. Only the flamingo with its special beak can obtain sustenance in these lakes. The flamingo’s curved beak plows the crust of water with its dorsal side in throwing movements, while the water is filtered and the crustaceans remain in the beak bowl. After staying and grazing in Lake Manyara, the flamingos must fly to freshwater lakes to drink and to excrete the salt.

The inlet to Lake Manyara is fresh water, with a rich bird and animal life. When the fresh water flows into the lake, which has no outlet, only evaporation regulates the water level. The water evaporates and the nutrient salts are left behind, creating a strongly alkaline environment that only the special crustaceans can master and live in.

NGORONGORO CRATER

Facts:
Ngorongoro Conservation Area 8,292 km2
The main area of the Maasai The
crater itself is 20 km in diameter, 600 meters difference in height from the edge to the bottom, 280 km2
Distance from Kilimanjaro International Airport 210 km
Driving time from Kilimanjaro International Airport approx. 4 hours
Flight time from Arusha airport to Manyara airstrip approx. 30 minutes, daily departures
The world’s largest animal migration
UNESCO World Heritage

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area was established in 1959 with a view to the conservation of landscape, animal, bird life and human activity with its forms of operation. The Maasai’s thousand-year-old traditions and nomadic mode of operation have been and are one of the most important contributions to the preservation of the landscape and species diversity. Ngorongoro is today considered one of the main areas of the Maasai. No other place in the world can you find such dense populations of wild animals in coexistence with human activity. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area borders the Serengeti National Park in the north.

Central to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is Olduvai Gorge, an archaeologically interesting area where early specimens of Homoides have been found. Excavations have taken place here for many 10 years with rich finds of tools, bones and bones. Footprints of the world’s first people are also found here, Olduvai Gorge is considered the cradle of mankind.

Ngorongoro with the crater is a collapsed volcano and thus geologically set a caldera. Geologists have calculated that Ngorongoro was as high as Kilimanjaro before it “collapsed”. Today you can experience the crater and crater floor with over 25,000 animals, the densest population of lions in Africa, about 70 lions in a limited area. The black rhino is also found here, approx. 30 pieces. The basis for the large animal density in the crater is found in access to water, good pastures and nutrient salts.

Ngorongoro is located in a geologically active area with the active volcano Oldoinyo Lengai which is Tanzania’s third highest mountain after Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. Oldoinyo Lengai has relatively regular small eruptions where it throws its nutrient-rich ash several hundred meters into the air. Large eruptions are relatively rare. The eruptions with nutrient-rich ash fall over Ngorongoro and the Serengeti are the most important basis for nutrient-rich plant growth as a basis for high animal density.

TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

Facts:
Tarangire National Park is 2,850 km2
Distance from Kilimanjaro International Airport 170 km
Driving time from Kilimanjaro International Airport approx. 3 hours
Flight time from Arusha airport to the airstrip in Tarangire approx. 15 minutes, daily departures
Large numbers of elephants
Rich birdlife with over 550 recorded bird species.
The very rare African wild dog can be observed.

Tarangire National Park consists of many different vegetation types and landscape areas. Savanna that transitions into woody and shrub savanna, wetland areas and palm forests. In large parts of the park, it is the giant baobab trees that characterize the landscape and give the landscape a unique beauty that is difficult to find elsewhere. A baobab tree reaching considerable sizes with a diamond of 2 to 5 meters is not uncommon in Tarangire. In other parts of Tanzania, the baobab trees reach sizes of over 6 meters in diameter. The bark of the baobab trees is sought after by the elephants and provides a nutritional supplement during dry periods

The Tarangire River is the park’s lifeblood and brings life-giving water to all of Tarangire. The river is water-bearing even in the driest periods of the year. The Tarangire River starts its journey from the central highlands of Dodoma before reaching Tarangire National Park. Here it meanders, flows quietly and leaves behind nutrient-rich sludge that provides the basis for good plant growth and a rich wildlife. Along the river bank, all the animals find plenty of water and pasture throughout the dry season.

Animal density is highest in the dry season from June to October. Then most African animal species can be observed. Tarangire is particularly famous for its large numbers of elephants during this period. The park also has a rich bird life with a great diversity of species, there are records of over 550 bird species in the park.

Safari in Tanzania

How do I put together a Safari that suits my preferences?

Everyone who goes on a Safari has different plans, budgets and wishes. To help you in your planning, we have put together some travel suggestions on how you can set up your Safari. We know that with the help of the Internet, many people can be quite well-read and have already formed an image of what they want to experience. That is why at “Jolita Safari” we usually tailor trips that suit your wishes.

Jolita Safari always strives for maximum customer satisfaction. With our network in Tanzania, we are probably one of the most flexible Safari organizers you can find in Internet. We can practically put together any safari/travel program.

What affects the price of my Safari?

Of course the number of days, but above all what standard you want in your accommodation. Accommodation is relatively expensive in Africa compared to other countries.

There are the following variants of accommodation:

  • Camping with own portable tents
  • Camping with fixed tents with wooden floors and bathrooms
  • Lodge simple
  • Lodge funds
  • Lodge luxury

Often the best option is to combine the above forms of accommodation. When you are on safari, accommodation tends to become of secondary importance, as you are easily captivated by the magnificent nature. Accommodation is not just about price, but the opportunity for different kinds of experiences. That e.g. camping is a fantastic experience, as you get so close to all the sounds of animals and nature or why not stay in a slightly more luxurious hotel at the Ngorongoro Crater to get a world-class view.  We can arrange accommodation depend on your choices and interest.

Activities

The price per day for a Safari jeep is always the same, but the entrance fees for the different parks differ , e.g. it costs US$ 300 to drive down the Ngorongoro Crater while it costs a few dollars in other parks.

Your budget

We always strive to produce the absolute best safari program that will suit your budget and wishes. When we know the season (which dates), number of days, which locations and standard you want in your accommodation, you will receive a tailored proposal from us.

Season

The price of Safari varies over the different months of the year, however, the highest prices are around July and December when it is the “peak season”. The lowest prices are found during the low season (rainy season) in March.

The more people who share a safari jeep, the cheaper it will be. The largest cars take 6 or 7 passengers. However, there are more people who have to agree on the space in the car.

Activities

Your activities will of course affect the cost. There is everything from balloon safaris over the Serengeti to jeep safaris to simpler hikes.

Our Safari Jeeps

The Jeeps we use for Safari are Toyota Land cruisers 4WD and Land Rover Defenders 4WD (we never use minibuses). These cars are equipped with dual communication radios and emergency equipment to ensure a safe, reliable and comfortable Safari. Standard Land Cruisers and Land Rovers seat 4 passengers and extended Safari Jeeps seat 6 people.

Sky Safari

If you want to catch up on as much as possible and avoid long dusty transport routes, we recommend that you combine your Safari with a Safari flight. Then you can e.g. fly into the Serengeti and jeep out of the Serengeti. That way, your safari will be less tiring.

It is possible to go on sky safaris from both Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Arusha. Then you fly in smaller aircraft, which usually take between 3 and 25 passengers. Or why not charter your plane so you can set up your own route to parks that are not normally served by scheduled flights.

Balloon safari

Book a balloon safari and ride silently over the Serengeti’s endless grasslands and see the incredibly beautiful panoramic view of all the animals roaming freely down on the ground. You get to experience the Serengeti in a way few have before and this is undoubtedly an experience you will rarely forget.

You will be picked up at five in the morning by “Serengeti balloon Safaris company” at your hotel / campsite. They pick up their guests from different Serengeti areas. They will take you where the balloon ride begins. While the balloon is being completed, you will get to meet your pilot, as well as get an overview of the ride. The balloon takes off at sunrise and you can determine the flight height together with the pilot. As you ascend, you gently skim the treetops, eventually reaching around 1,000 meters, where a vast, breathtaking panoramic view unfolds before you. The silence up here is numbing.

The balloon ride takes about 1 hour and when you land you get an “out of Africa” breakfast that is laid out in the middle of the bush with linen, silver cutlery and champagne as well as a “Serengeti balloon certificate” that proves your flying prowess. Then you will be returned to your hotel or campsite where you will continue the day’s program.

Put together your own dream Safari trip

In fact, most of the trips we sell are customized in some way, as we always strive to give you as much experience as possible for your money. We usually leave a recommendation on some form of basic travel package that you can base your discussion with us on.

Prices and availability of flights and overnight accommodation vary with the different seasons (peak, high and low season), e.g. around July and Christmas Eve is the peak season and then it can be a little more expensive and you should book your trip as early as possible, because the hotels in the parks tend to be fully booked.

Most people have different wishes regarding activities, form of accommodation and number of days. Therefore, our work as a Safari organizer consists of listening to your wishes and then organizing this in the best possible way. Jolita Safari is a Tanzanian company, so there are no intermediaries, you discuss directly with us.

Most people who put together their trip usually start from the options as seen in our website. Call, email or meet us for an unconditional discussion.
