Off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean lies Zanzibar, a tropical island with a mix of African, Arab, Indian and Western cultures. The heart of the Zanzibar island is Stonetown with its colonial buildings. The Arabic houses are most recognizable by the large wooden doors and porches. Stone was only used to build from 1830. The city was the centre of trade between East Africa and Asia and Africa before colonization that began at the end of the 19th century. The old town is built on a triangular peninsula on the western side of the island. The city consists of a maze of small, narrow streets lined with houses, shops, and mosques. Cars cannot enter the narrow streets and transport is only done on foot, bicycle or motorcycle.
The markets in Stone Town are special, especially the fish market. Intriguing are David Livingstone’s residence and the old slave dungeons. You can also take a trip to the spice plantations, the red colobus monkeys in the Jozani forest or to Changuu Island with its giant tortoises. Vast white sandy Zanzibares on the island of Zanzibar invite you to do nothing at all. Time to relax, sunbathe, snorkel or dive. In the meantime, you can still enjoy your safari trip.
