Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Udzungwa Mountains National Park (1990 km²) can be visited by going from Mikumi Park to Ruaha. It is located in the highest mountain of the twelve that make up the Eastern Mountain Arc, otherwise nicknamed “the African Galapagos” because of the richness of its flora and fauna. This park is covered with a forest extending from 250 to 2000 m above sea level. It offers enthusiasts more than 400 species of birds, some of which are endemic such as the forest partridge, discovered only in 1991. There are also “exclusive” monkeys such as the Iringa bay colobus ( Procolobus gordonorum ) and the Sanje crested spittlebug ( Cercoceibus Sanjei ), and others as well since six species of primates frequent the park.

Visiting the park is done exclusively on foot, often for a day in addition to a stay in Mikumi, from which it is only 75 km away. Or for the “happy few” over several days, with porters for food, water, cooking and tent, just like in the early days of the explorers of Africa, and an armed ranger. It is therefore a paradise for hikers with an excellent network of forest trails. The only possible accommodation inside the park is camping.
