Mikumi National Park and its green plains are surrounded by the Uluguru Mountains in the north and the Rubeho Mountains in the southeast. Mikumi National Park is the closest national park to Dar-es-Salaam and borders Africa’s largest game reserve, Selous.
Mikumi is home to elephants, giraffes, buffalos, zebras, elands, wildebeest and lions. There are also many (380 species) birds to spot. A main road straight through the park divides the park into a northern and southern part. The park can be reached from Dar es Salaam in four hours via this road.
The park also offers walking safaris and is ideally located for a 1 or 2 night stopover when traveling to the southern parks of Ruaha or Selous. The plains resemble the Serengeti and when there is sufficient water, large groups of buffalo and wildebeest like to use it.
Distances
The parks in southern Tanzania are more difficult to reach by road than in northern Tanzania. Travel distances are longer and more tiring.
Therefore, in most cases it is worth considering covering the distances by transfer flight. This saves a lot of time and, depending on the time of the flight, there is still enough time left at the place of departure and arrival to participate in an activity that day.
For road transfers it is not possible to drive directly between Ruaha and Selous. The route must then go via Mikumi.
Duration of transfer by road
Dar es Salaam – Mikumi: 6 hours or more depending on circumstances.
Mikumi – Ruaha: 6 hours or more depending on circumstances
Mikumi – Selous: 9 hours or more depending on circumstances (but on an adventurous route with a lot to see.)
Duration of transfer by flight
Mikumi – Dar es salaam: 85 minutes
Mikumi – Ruaha: 65 minutes
Mikumi – Selous: 30 minutes
