Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi is an elongated alkaline soda lake bordering the southern highlands of the Ngorongoro area. During heavy rainfall the lake can increase in size up to 80 kilometers in length and during major droughts the lake can dry up completely. The wildlife around the lake depends on the vegetation, which is why the area is not known for abundant wildlife, but mainly for bird species that migrate here from Europe. In addition to the thousands of flamingos and pelicans that regularly settle here, many other bird species can be found here. The landscape around Lake Eyasi is dry, so the vegetation mainly consists of succulents, large agaves and Baobab trees.

South of the lake there is a mountain landscape with tropical forests of native tree species and in the northwest, the lake is enclosed by the high granite steep walls. The area around Lake Eyasi is the habitat of the traditionally living Hadzabe tribe, also known as bushmen. This nomadic Hadzabe tribe communicate with special click clack sounds and have enormous knowledge of the bush.

The Hadzabe tribe still hunts with bow and arrow for their daily meals, which mainly consist of poultry, but also baboons and eat this meat. The women grow various vegetables, some varieties of which are unknown to many of us. Even though the government tries to make them accept the habits of modern times, these Hadzabe reject this. In their habitat there are clear sources for good drinking water. Jolita Safari takes you to this special tribe, where you can join them on the hunt to see how agile they are.
