Kitulo National Park which the local populations called it
Bustani ya Mungu , the Garden of
God , and the botanists who nicknamed it the
” Serengeti of flowers ” give an idea
of the main interest of the latest addition (in 2002, with Saadani) of the
parks Tanzanian nationals, its flora which offers “ one of the
most beautiful floral spectacles in the world ”! On its 412 km²
no less than 45 species of orchids have been recorded among more than 350
species of plants. Access to the park is difficult, the most interesting
period, that of flowering, is from December to April.
It is very south of Ruaha, in western Tanzania that this park is located,
quite small, at least on the Tanzanian scale because it is still almost 440
km². It is a plateau with an average altitude of 2600 m, access to the park
is not easy, this and its less spectacular and obvious fauna than the other
parks in Tanzania reserve it for the happy
few , mainly botanists and others lovers of flora,
even if the “ornithos” also have something to rejoice, with
species that are only found here in Tanzania (including the Denham’s
bustard) and endangered species like the blue swallow, the mountain beetle
( Euplectes psammocromius ) and
others. Hikers will also be happy to explore a park which is reserved for
walkers, in the middle of exuberant and colorful nature.
