Katavi National Park is the tourist discovery of recent years is Katavi National Park. Due to its remote location, the park is rarely visited. An ultimate and adventurous safari is still a guarantee here.
Katavi National Park covers an area of 4,471 km², and is famous for its density of hippos, crocodiles and buffalo. There are also black antelopes.
The differences in appearance are enormous between the rainy period, when everything is green and large areas are transformed into swamps, and the dry season when hippotamuses crowd into the remaining puddles! It is essential to visit it in the dry season, when vegetation is minimal, if you want to “benefit” from the hunting activity of lions and hyenas without being bothered by tall grass, but January-February is also a possible period. , interesting for birds in particular. Large herds of several hundred buffalo are seen especially at the start of the dry season, June and July. The most spectacular gatherings of hippos are seen (and felt…) at the end of the dry season, while the crocodiles of Katavi are the only ones, along with those of Zambia , to dig “burrows” in the banks to avoid the blazing sun. Homeless crocs are forced to take refuge in the shade of trees like common impalas.
Accommodation is rare and rather expensive. Chada Katavi , the best located near Lake Chada and the most expensive, belongs to the Nomad Tanzania group which also owns Greystoke in Mahale and Sand Rivers in Selous. The former Katavi Wildlife Camp, located near Lake Katavi, is now owned by the Fox family.
Katavi National Park is the fourth largest park in Tanzania but perhaps the most pristine of all other parks. Katavi is best visited from July to October and has beautiful forests, lakes and plains. Game drive can be found here in large quantities. Elephants, thousands of buffalos, lions, leopards, antelopes, zebras and giraffes are just a few.
Flying in is the best option. Reaching Katavi by road will take you a lot of time, but it is of course adventurous.
