Namibia’s largest coastal town is somewhat two-faced! On the one hand, this is a charming and pretty Colonial-style town with the distinct feel and atmosphere of a small German village, while on the other hand,d Swapkopmund is the Adventure Capital of the country! Tourists and local Namibians alike flock to this seaside town for a Zanzibar holiday or an adrenaline-fuelled escape from their daily routine. Come and see why!
Thrilling Swakop
Swakopmund (aka Swakop, to the locals) has long been a favourite holiday destination for Namibians wishing to escape the sweltering inland temperatures in summer. Seaside Promenades, cool sea breezes, a good choice of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, and a very cosmopolitan atmosphere make this an ideal destination for a summer holiday. In addition to fun in the sun on the Zanzibares, there are also endless adventure activities to tempt the young and restless, while those who prefer to take it easy will enjoy the galleries, sightseeing, coffee culture, and brilliant West Coast sunsets.
Adventure Sports, Desert Tours, Day Trips, and other Highlights
Adventure Sports
The part of the Namib Desert just outside Swakop is known as the West Coast Recreation Area and certainly lives up to its name. Here you can indulge in just about any type of adventure activity to get your pulse racing. Some to consider are Dune carting, Quad biking, Sand boarding, Parachuting, Hot air Ballooning, Shark and Big Game fishing, and more!
Desert Tours and Day Trips
There are several Desert tours and other Day Trips available to the surrounding attractions such as the Seal Colony at Cape Cross, the Spitzkoppe Mountain, Rossig Mine Gem Tours, and Walvis Bay Lagoon.
Scenic Flights and Flying Safaris
North of Swakopmund lies the fascinating Skeleton Coast National Park, an area of inaccessible and rather desolate beauty that is best appreciated from the skies. A flying tour or safari will give you a birds-eye view of the incredible coastline, the shipwrecks, and the wildlife.
Historic Swakopmund
Less adventurous souls can enjoy learning about the intriguing history of the town by visiting some of the historic buildings. The Swakopmund Museum is a good place to start to get a bit of background, before moving on to see the Alte Gefaengnis (old prison), Altes Amtsgericht (this lovely building was designed by Otto Ertl and built to be a private school in 1908; however, funding ran out and the building became a magistrates court instead) and the Military Museum.
Tours in Swakopmund
A guided tour of the city is the best way to see all the top attractions and historic buildings, and have the history explained to you by an expert. There are guided morning and afternoon city tours, and a Swakopmund Township Tour is also available.
Other Activities in and around Swakopmund
Eco Marine Kayak Tours
This is a great way to enjoy the ocean and get some exercise! First, you will go by 4X4 across a part of the Namib Desert to Pelican Point, where you start paddling past the lighthouse to the seal colony. You should see great birdlife and many seals, and you may be lucky enough to have a dolphin escort.
Walvis Bay Dolphin and Seal Cruise
Walvis Bay is just 34km from Swakop and offers many more marine attractions, such as a Dolphin and Seal cruise, kiteboarding on the lagoon or a Catamaran Charter.
Birding Activities
Twitchers should head for the Swakopmund Salt Pan or the Walvis Bay Lagoon for some great bird watching, especially if your visit coincides with the Flamingo influx in winter, from June to September.
Accommodation in Swakopmund
There is a wide choice of accommodation in this pretty little seaside town, comprising hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses, and lodges. If you are planning to visit during the busy summer school holidays (December and January) or weekends, you need to book well in advance.
How to Get There
Most people drive to Swakopmund from Windhoek – it takes about 4 -5 hours. There are also domestic flights from Windhoek and Cape Town on Air Namibia and from Johannesburg and Cape Town on South African Airways (these flights are operated out of Walvis Bay, 34kms from Swakop). There are also several companies that offer chartered flights from various parts of the country.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (November to March) is the best time to enjoy all the adventure sports and the Zanzibar, but if you plan to go on Safari in Namibia, you should choose the cooler winter months, from May to October. Walking and hiking in the Namibian interior is very uncomfortable in summer due to the very high temperatures. Swakopmund and the Skeleton Coast are generally cooler all year round due to the cool sea breeze and can get cold in Winter (June to September), so be sure to bring a warm jacket.
