Types of Accommodation in Africa

Sometimes, it’s hard not to generalize. And we shouldn’t generalize about topics as extensive and complex as accommodation. However, we are going to make this post, dedicated to the different types of accommodation in Africa, precisely to demystify some stereotypes that exist about this continent. Because it’s not all dry plains and African savannahs, but there’s also luxury and comfort, as is the case on every continent. If you want to know the different types of places to stay in Africa, don’t hesitate to keep reading, because it can be interesting.

First of all, it must be said that it all depends on the area of Africa we are talking about, and also on the country in particular. Because it is a continent where there is practically everything, and we can find uncomfortable shacks and luxurious hotels with all kinds of services. And because it’s not the same to stay in Casablanca as it is to stay in a town in South Africa. For this reason, it should not be generalized, but we are going to talk about a couple of accommodations, which have nothing to do with the typical cabin you are thinking of.

Types of Accommodation in Africa

Lots of amenities, wherever you are

First of all, it must be said that the fact that there is such a clear opinion about the accommodation is given by the experiences that come to us from volunteers, and from the few people we know of that place, or who have been touring Africa. And that is not a universal truth, but only one more point of view that can exist on so many other subjects. In any case, the best thing you can do is do some research, because if you take a tour of Africa, you will realize that accommodation here is easier to find. At least easier than you think.

When people go on mission, that is, as missionaries, it is logical that they have an experience similar to that of the inhabitants of the village where they volunteer, that is, living with families that may be poor or less poor, and enjoying the same comforts as them. It is true that if you are a conventional tourist, you can also live this type of experience, as there are many people who share their homes and the free rooms they have as alternative accommodation for tourists. It’s a good way to make a living, and you can also get a first-hand look at the kind of life that’s still there

This does not mean that you stay in mud and straw shacks, but that they can range from apartments to luxurious villas, whose owners want to meet a little more people from the outside. Some places combine the luxury that a hotel can offer, as well as its amenities, but also the closeness to a local family that could give you a much closer, and more personal, experience. In any case, whether you want something rural, or if you want to stay in a city, the best thing you can do is look for this type of alternative accommodation.

And of course, you also have the classic accommodations, or those that we all know. These are hotels, of all categories, hostels and resorts, where you can find those specific services that you were looking for. So depending on your budget, you can rent one thing or the other. Also keep in mind that even if you are going to go somewhere rural and you are going to stay in a typical cabin there, it does not have to be the cheapest, since everything will depend on the services they offer. That’s why find out before you go, and choose wisely.
