Experience Culture & Heritage

Go beyond the typical tourist path. At Jolita Safari, our journeys focus on the heart of any destination its people. Immerse yourself in local culture and traditions, meet communities, explore historical sites, and experience daily life firsthand. Discovering new ways of life and connecting with locals is at the core of the Jolita Safari experience.

OUR COMMITMENT

We are committed to responsible travel that protects natural environments and supports the well-being of local communities. At Jolita Safari, we believe that tourism should foster positive cultural and environmental practices. Aware of the potential impacts on the fragile ecosystems we visit, we embrace a ‘leave no trace’ approach. Working closely with our local guides, we ensure that every journey promotes sustainable and responsible tourism.

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM

“While it is impossible to guarantee that every tour company in Tanzania operates ethically, even if registered with Western Project, at Jolita Safari we take every step to prioritize ethical and environmental considerations when planning our trips to Mount Kilimanjaro and Tanzanian wildlife safaris.”

Tourism contributed 3,368.7 million to Tanzania’s GDP in 2023, making it the country’s second-largest source of foreign income. When managed responsibly, tourism can strengthen regional economies and help preserve cultural practices that might otherwise be lost. However, uncontrolled tourism can negatively impact local communities and cause irreversible environmental damage.

At Jolita Safari, we are deeply committed to responsible travel in Tanzania and Zanzibar. We believe that travel is one of the best ways to truly understand the world and the people we share it with. Over the past decades, tourism has also played a significant role in supporting developing economies worldwide.

Yet, the rapid growth of tourism has caused harm in some areas, and many modes of transport, especially air travel, contribute to climate change. To ensure that future generations can enjoy the most beautiful parts of our planet, it is more important than ever to travel thoughtfully, ethically, and with respect for the cultures and environments you encounter.

ECO-CREDENTIALS

Consider how your travel choices and the services you use impact the local economy whether it’s hiring local guides and staff, purchasing locally produced food, or supporting other community businesses. Rather than simply ticking off items on your bucket list, travel with purpose. Spend more time in each location to truly connect with the people and culture around you.

Ensure your travels avoid supporting unethical practices, including racism, mistreatment of employees, minimal contributions to local communities, or corruption. At Jolita Safari, we treat every member of our team as an integral part of the experience, and any donations from trips are shared fairly among all participants.

Be mindful of environmental and resource impacts both at home and while traveling. In many developing regions, water is scarce, and tourism can affect local flora and wildlife. Support companies that prioritize sustainability and strive to make your trips climate-neutral whenever possible.

Jolita Safari prioritizes recruiting staff from nearby communities whenever possible, contributing to social development projects that benefit the local area.

From time to time, guests contribute donations, and we ensure these are directed to the appropriate community causes.

TANZANIA SAFARI REGIONS

Tanzania has long been celebrated as a wildlife paradise. In the past, vast herds of elephants, buffalo, and countless other animals roamed freely, with the lions reigning as kings of the jungle. To preserve the magic of this unspoiled wilderness for future generations, expansive National Parks were established to protect these unique habitats. Today, they await your discovery and adventure.

The world’s most iconic landmarks and wildlife experiences are concentrated in this region — from the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater to Mount Kilimanjaro and Olduvai Gorge, to name just a few. Northern Tanzania is also known for its vast coffee, maize, and banana plantations, thanks to fertile volcanic soils that make it the country’s main agricultural hub. Additionally, this region is home to one of the world’s rarest gemstones TANZANITE mined at the Mererani Hills between Kilimanjaro and Arusha.

This region is home to some of Africa’s largest wildlife reserves and national parks, including Selous and Ruaha. These parks shelter over 150,000 elephants, more than 40,000 hippos, and countless big cats, gazelles, and bird species.

The landscape here is equally stunning and rugged, with the Udzungwa Mountains and the Rufiji and Great Ruaha Rivers providing permanent water sources for both wildlife and local communities. For easier exploration, Jolita Safari also includes the eastern areas, such as East Africa’s only coastal national park Saadani. This small yet unique park offers a rare place where the bush meets the beaches of Zanzibar.

One of Tanzania’s most pristine regions, this area is home to Africa’s deepest lake, Lake Tanganyika, and the Mahale Mountains, where diverse primate species thrive, including habituated chimpanzee groups made famous by Jane Goodall and her research team in the 1970s.

Mahale, Gombe, and Katavi National Parks are truly exclusive destinations, perfect for the safari connoisseur seeking rugged landscapes and diverse wildlife. Katavi, Tanzania’s third-largest national park, is home to impressive populations of topi, buffalo, and the endangered African wild dog, offering a uniquely immersive safari experience.

Situated along the Indian Ocean, Tanzania’s rich history has attracted settlers from around the world, including Arabia, India, Portugal, Germany, and England.

The Swahili Coast bears traces of Tanzania’s complex past, including its history of the slave trade. Yet it also boasts stunning, largely unspoiled landscapes, from the white (and in some areas golden) sandy beaches of Zanzibar to vibrant coral reefs. Protected areas provide sanctuary for numerous endemic species, such as the red colobus monkey, green turtles, and even the ancient coelacanth.

Tanzania is a destination that discerning travelers often visit more than once. With its vast, diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage, those who experience the country frequently find themselves longing to return for more.

SAFARI AT A GLANCE

We’re here to answer your travel questions: When is the best time to visit Tanzania? What is the ideal age for children to join a safari? Where can you spot the Big Five? These are the questions we love to help with, and we have the answers.

Tanzania is easy to reach, with daily flights from most major airports in Europe and around the world. The country has two main international airports, Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam, both of which allow you to reach a National Park within two hours and start experiencing incredible wildlife sightings almost immediately.

We are committed to minimizing the impact of tourism on Tanzania’s land and people. We can help you select camps and lodges that promote sustainable tourism and assist in planning activities that respect both the environment and local communities.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO TANZANIA

Tanzania is a fantastic destination to visit throughout the year. The peak season for a Tanzanian safari runs from December to March, featuring the warmest temperatures — 20–25°C inland and 32–39°C along the coast. Another peak occurs from June to August, mainly due to the Great Migration in the Serengeti, with temperatures ranging from 10°C at Ngorongoro Crater and 15–18°C in the Serengeti to around 25°C on the coast.

The shoulder seasons, ideal for visiting outside peak times, are March and September to November. The low season falls between April and May, during the long rains. Despite the rain, the landscape is lush, and wildlife thrives, making it a great time to visit especially in the southwestern Serengeti and Maswa Plains, where wildebeest calves begin their first of many migrations with the rest of the herd across the Serengeti.

SAFARI ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation in Tanzania ranges from simple lodgings to luxurious options, with luxury mobile camping on safari being especially appealing and exclusive. For travelers on a tighter budget, we can arrange basic mobile camping safaris. Other options include mid-range lodges or semi-luxury mobile camps, offering comfort while staying close to nature.

All camping safaris include three meals a day, plus snacks and hot beverages, prepared by a professional camp cook. More luxurious safari accommodations include treetop lodges, permanent tented camps, and exclusive luxury mobile tents, providing personalized service. Along the coast and in Zanzibar, options range from simple hotels to larger resorts, or more private properties with villas and bungalows.

Accommodations before and after a Tanzanian safari can be arranged in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Zanzibar, offering city hotels or charming lodges just outside the main centers.

Explore the full range of accommodation choices in Tanzania on our accommodation pages.

SUSTAINABLE SAFARI TOURS

On a Jolita Safari, we ensure our clients stay in eco-lodges that actively protect the environment. We strongly discourage the use of single-use plastics, such as straws and plastic bags, to help preserve these natural spaces.
In addition, our safaris include activities that positively impact local communities, such as visiting schools, participating in local cooking classes, walking through villages and markets, city tours, and contributing to community projects like tree planting. These experiences minimize environmental impact while giving you an authentic insight into local culture and a richer travel experience.
All our tours are designed to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, while also creating unforgettable memories for our clients.
